Quiet...soundless, like a void...
Kohana Suzuki blinked and stared up at the ceiling of the Squad 9 Captain's quarters. Her breathing was slow, as if she was falling asleep, but really that was the complete opposite. Kohana had not been able to sleep for the past three days ever since word of multiple Arrancar attacks in the World of the Living reached the Soul Society.
"So this...this is how life is as a captain in the Thirteen Court Guard Squad. Never a dull moment..."
She whispered and chuckled softly to herself. The Arrancars were not the only problem she couldn't get out of her mind. An immense amount of pressure was also weighing down on her shoulders, thanks to the previous captain, Kaname Tosen. His dark shadow was still cast over her squad, a mark that will never fully be removed.
How could three captains destroy the pride of three squads...no the entire Soul Society...so easily? How could they disgrace the symbol of a captain's leadership as if it was nothing? This squad...and the two others as well...may never trust a new captain ever again...all because of three men...
Kohana squeezed her eyes shut. Tosen had set down a wall between her and her squad, one impossible to scale.
"If we can't put the past behind us, then I'll just have to break down that barrier myself."
She said out loud, and with that she sat up and swung her legs out of bed. Kohana glanced out the open window behind her to see the moon shining its milky blue light down onto her face. The sky was dotted with thousands of stars, cloudless, and a cool breeze was blowing into her room. She slipped on her shoes, got up, and grabbed her captain's robes off the end of her bed. The fabric was thin, yet warm, and the white and black patterned bell sleeves flowed gracefully to the floor. Kohana wrapped the robes tightly around her kimono, ready to leave, but just before she left she grabbed her zanpaku-to and a large stack of papers from under her bed. She silently left her quarters.

The spring season was almost over and the last of the cherry blossoms were being blow away by the wind. It was a bit on the chilly side and the breeze nipped at the nose and picked up the long, brown hair of a solitary figure in the night. She sat in a small patch of flowers, in her lap and scattered around her were notes on various topics by the previous captain of squad 9. Her only light source was the blue moon peeking over the large rock wall surrounding the barracks. Beside her was her zanpaku-to sticking upright out of the dirt, the blade glinting eerily in the blue moonlight. The young woman shuffled through a few more pages, her burgundy-brown eyes moving rapidly over the sheets of parchment. Finally, she sighed, brushed the hair from her eyes, and turned to her katana,
"Azarni, can I talk with you?"
She asked the blade. A large gust of wind blew past the steel making it sing like a leaf whistle in the quiet night. Ribbons of earth green reiatsu wrapped around the zanpaku-to. The world around the sword seemed to vibrate with the intense amount of spiritual pressure coming from the young woman and her katana. It lasted for barely a moment before clearing, the spiritual pressure died down to its usual dull hum. The blade was gone. In its place was a small pixie, no larger than the woman's hand, with a gown of flowers and various green fabrics covering her tiny body. Her sharp features matched her wielder's as well as the long, brown hair.
"Yes, Kohana? Rough night again, I see..."
Her voice was as soft as a whistle, but audible to those with keen ears. Kohana smiled mournfully and nodded.
"He seemed like an excellent captain - although I don't really agree on his morals - what went wrong?"
Azarni, the spirit of Kohana's zanpaku-to, fluttered up to her shoulder to get a bird's-eye view of the pages. She knew Kohana was speaking of the ex-captain of squad nine, Kaname Tosen.
"I don't know, Kohana, I don't know...it appears his idea of 'justice' misled him down a dark path..."
"You're probably right..."
Kohana murmured as she folded the parchment containing documents on the squad's training regime.
"You know,"
Kohana whispered, a far-off look in her eyes, as she gazed at the moon,
"While I was still a child in the Rukongai, a woman once told me a phrase I will never forget. She said, 'The only way to justice is through peace, because peace is the only true justice.' This woman helped me unlock the reiatsu inside of me. It took me years to understand what she had meant, but when I got it...it changed me. I found that there is good in everyone, no matter how dark their outer intentions may seem. That's why I refuse to fight at all costs until attacked first. If I can show that kindness and understanding, then this world is one step closer to being a better place."
She smiled up at the moon, then looked back down at the pages,
"That is why I have to find out everything on Tosen. If...if I can figure out what he did wrong, maybe, just maybe, I can repair it and gain the squad's trust again...maybe..."
Azarni was silent for a moment, then she whispered,
"This task was set before you, I cannot help you through it. But I wish you the best of luck, as always, Kohana..."
Before returning back to her zanpaku-to in a last burst of spiritual pressure.
"Just like her...always avoiding the work with words of wisdom. Oh well, it's not like I have anything better to do..."
Kohana murmured aloud, smiling to herself. She gently brushed her fingers along the hilt of her sword, now back in its original position in the earth, before turning back to the papers,
I've got a long night ahead of me...
